Our Town

The American Legion Post #158 was established in 1919 and was reorganized in 1922. It was known as the Ernest Stuehrk Post in honor of the first WWI casualty. Each year a Memorial Day Service is held in the Cedar Bluffs Auditorium. Also on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day and Independence Day, the “Avenue of Flags” proudly flies at the Legion Field west of town. These flags have been donated by the family of past members.

On April 2, 1941 the first meeting for the American Legion Auxiliary Post #158 was held. The ladies patriotism for the Legion has always been outstanding. Monthly meetings and fund raisers are still held to support the unit.

In 1983 The Sons of American Legion was established. This vital organization is made up of sons of the American Veterans. With a current membership of 63, steak and fish fries are held to help support the efforts of the Post. In 2010 an addition to the building was completed.

In 1904 a small group from the Cedar Bluffs community met in the Opera House to organize an English speaking church. In 1905, 2 lots were purchased on the corner of King & East Main Street and the First Presbyterian Church was built. In 1988, the current church on South King Street was built approximately 3 blocks south of the original site. The original church still stands today and was sold to a private citizen. The original bell stills tolls in the memorial bell tower and chimes play twice a day to different seasonal hymns.

The Cedar Bluffs Public School system was started in 1914. The original building was a 2½ story high brick facility that was completed one year later. As the school system grew, so did the facility, making way for new additions. Land west of the location was purchased from the village as well as the railroad right of way. This now serves as a practice field for various sport activities.

On May 28, 1956 a new Fire Department was established adjacent to the old City Hall. As years moved forward, so did the CB Fire & Rescue Department. In 2001, a new station was built on the old City Hall site which now houses 15 fire and rescue units. Currently there are 34 dedicated volunteers that provide service for Cedar Bluffs and the surrounding communities.
